Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Auman's Step Up to Writing as a learner-centered strategy in improving the persuasive writing skills of selected HUMSS students at Surigao del Norte National High School for the 2024-2025 academic year. Specifically, this study focused on the level of the student's persuasive writing skills in terms of organization, ideascontent, languagestyle, and convention. It also examined the significant difference in the participantspersuasive writing skills before and after the intervention, as well as the significant effect of the intervention on the studentspost-writing. The study employed a quasi-experimental research design, which involved two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The writing tasks were based on the validated researcher-made questionnaire, and the two groups were rated using an adapted scoring rubric. Data were analyzed using mean and Standard Deviation, Paired Samples t-test, and Mann-Whitney U Test. The study revealed that the posttest administered using Auman's Step Up to Writing obtained a mean score of 10.60, indicating a "Basic" level. At the same time, the control group exposed to conventional instruction had a mean score of 3.72, indicating a level of "Below Basic." Additionally, there is a significant difference in the mean scores of the experimental group between the pretest and posttest. Moreover, greater mean gain scores were noted for students in the experimental group who were introduced to Auman's writing strategy than for the students in the control group who were taught in the traditional way. This indicated that the use of Auman's writing strategy in teaching persuasive writing had a larger effect on the experimental group than on the control group, which did not receive the intervention. The experimental group made a significant difference, and the group results are notably different from one another. Hence, the use of Auman's Step Up to Writing strategy was found to be effective in improving the student's persuasive writing skills.
