Abstract
Indias economic growth depends significantly on its ability to equip the youth with industry-relevant skills. Despite multiple government initiatives, participation in skill-oriented education remains below desired levels. This study investigates the cognitive, socio-cultural, and economic factors that influence Indian students engagement with skill-based training. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 600 students through structured surveys and 30 in-depth interviews across urban and rural areas. Statistical analysis revealed that perceived career utility, societal prestige hierarchies, parental expectations, and affordability were the most significant determinants. While cognitive recognition of the benefits of skill training was high, socio-cultural stigma and financial limitations reduced actual enrolment. The study recommends early integration of skill subjects into mainstream education, targeted parental awareness programs, and industry-linked scholarship initiatives to improve uptake. Keywords Skill-Oriented Education, Student Psychology, Socio-Cultural Factors, Vocational Training, India, Economic Determinants
