Abstract
Curcumin, a naturally occurring polyphenol extracted from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa(turmeric), has attracted extensive scientific interest due to its broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities 1. It exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antitumor, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. Despite being extensively used in traditional medicine, curcumin has only recently begun to receive serious consideration in modern therapeutics, primarily due to advancements in molecular pharmacology and drug delivery systems. However, curcumins poor oral bioavailability and rapid systemic elimination remain significant obstacles 2. This review explores the origin, structure, pharmacokinetics, therapeutic applications, mechanisms of action, recent formulation strategies, and future research directions related to curcumin.
