Abstract

The increasing popularity of mobile money services in Uganda, particularly Airtel Money, has revolutionized financial transactions but also exposed people to digital fraud. Traditional systems of fraud detection have proved ineffective in addressing evolving threats, calling for smarter and more responsive systems. This study investigates the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered fraud detection systems on Airtel Money security performance, and in particular the significant factors that enhance their effectiveness. Data were collected through a mixed descriptive and correlational research design using structured questionnaires filled out by Airtel Uganda staff and system security officials. Statistical analysis has shown that AI modules such as real-time anomaly detection, machine learning-pattern recognition, behavior analytics, and auto-notifications contribute immensely to reducing fraudulent transactions, financial loss, and response time. The study concludes that AI-based systems are key to increasing the security of mobile money platforms through proactive and adaptive fraud prevention. It recommends further AI technology investment, increased staff training, biometric authentication use, and data sharing between networks to enhance fraud detection and build customer trust. Keywords: Artificial intelligence, fraud detection, mobile money, security performance, fraud prevention and digital transformation
