Abstract
Pruritus, or chronic itching, is a common and uncomfortable symptom linked to a variety of skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis, as well as systemic conditions like liver and kidney diseases. Conventional anti-pruritic treatmentsincluding antihistamines and topical corticosteroidsmay offer short-term relief but often result in side effects like skin thinning, dryness, and increased sensitivity with prolonged use. As a result, there is a growing interest in herbal anti-pruritic formulations enriched with essential oils due to their safety, efficacy, and added skin-nourishing benefits. Essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, peppermint, and tea tree oil possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties, while herbal extracts like aloe vera, calendula, neem, and licorice enhance moisturization, healing, and immune modulation. The synergistic combination of these botanicals in lotion form addresses not only itch relief but also skin barrier repair and hydration. This review highlights the underlying mechanisms of pruritus, discusses the pharmacological roles of key herbs and essential oils, and evaluates recent advances in formulation development. Overall, essential oil-based herbal lotions present a natural, effective, and well-tolerated alternative for long-term pruritus management, aligning with the increasing consumer demand for safe and sustainable skincare solutions.
