Abstract

India and the United Kingdom (UK) share a dynamic economic partnership rooted in historical ties and evolving strategic interests. While trade relations declined in the post-independence period, economic liberalization in India and shifting global trade dynamics have reinvigorated bilateral engagement. This study assesses actual and potential import patterns between India and the UK for 200122 and projects trade flows from 2025 to 2034. In 2022, India's imports from the UK stood at US$ 9.6 billion, significantly lower than the estimated potential of US$ 170.5 billion, representing only 5.6% realization. A similar pattern is observed in UK imports from India, which totaled US$ 14.1 billion against a potential of US$ 206.6 billion (only 6.8% realization). Over 200122, India and the UK averaged realization rates of 4.6% and 7.4%, respectively, indicating a consistent underutilization of bilateral trade potential. To bridge this trade gap, India and the UK signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on 24 July 2025, following 15 formal negotiation rounds. The FTA includes tariff liberalizations, with the UK offering zero-duty access for 99% of Indian exports and India reducing tariffs on products like whisky and electric vehicles. The deal aims to raise bilateral trade to US$ 112 billion by 2030, targeting key sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, IT services, premium beverages, and medical equipment. This study analyzes historical and projected trade trends, evaluates the gap between actual and potential trade, and assesses how the FTA may alter future trade flows. The findings highlight an urgent need for targeted trade facilitation policies, institutional reforms, and export diversification to fully leverage this strategic partnership. Keywords: Bilateral Trade, Free Trade Agreement (FTA), IndiaUK Trade, Projected Imports, Strategic Partnership, Trade Potential.
