Abstract
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of Indias economy, contributing nearly 30% to the GDP and providing employment to over 110 million people. Despite their vital role, MSMEs face persistent challenges such as limited access to formal credit, inadequate technological resources, and poor financial infrastructure, which hinder their growth and sustainability. Traditional banking systems, with their complex processes, stringent collateral requirements, and geographical barriers, often fall short of meeting the unique financial needs of MSMEs. This scenario has paved the way for the adoption of financial technology (fintech) as a transformative solution to address these challenges.Fintech encompasses innovations such as digital payments, online lending platforms, and alternative credit scoring mechanisms, enabling MSMEs to streamline operations, access credit, and expand their market reach. Platforms like Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and mobile wallets enhance transaction transparency, reduce dependence on cash, and improve operational efficiency. Fintech lending solutions offer quick, collateral-free loans based on non-traditional credit assessments, effectively addressing working capital constraints and empowering MSMEs to compete in both domestic and global markets. This study explores the adoption of fintech by MSMEs in India, focusing on the factors driving its acceptance, the challenges faced by MSMEs, and the impact on their overall performance. Utilizing insights from government publications, industry reports, case studies, and fintech service providers, the research reveals that while fintech adoption is gaining momentum, significant disparities exist between urban and rural MSMEs. Factors such as increased smartphone penetration, affordable internet access, and the convenience of digital platforms are driving adoption, but barriers like low digital literacy, mistrust of digital systems, data privacy concerns, and inadequate rural infrastructure continue to impede widespread adoption. The findings underscore the transformative benefits of fintech for MSMEs, including improved access to formal credit, enhanced financial management, and expanded market reach. However, the research also highlights the need for targeted interventions to promote inclusive adoption. Recommendations include implementing digital literacy programs, offering financial incentives for fintech adoption, and strengthening cybersecurity measures to foster trust in digital systems. Collaborative efforts by the government, financial institutions, and fintech companies are crucial to ensuring that the benefits of fintech reach even the most underserved regions. In conclusion, fintech adoption is a pivotal step in modernizing MSMEs and addressing their long-standing challenges. By embracing fintech innovations, MSMEs can unlock their growth potential, bolster their competitiveness, and significantly contribute to Indias goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy. Future research could delve deeper into the long-term impact of specific fintech tools on the MSME sector, providing valuable insights for stakeholders and policymakers.
