Abstract
Undoubtedly, economic progress of any nation stands on the pillar of industrial growth and development and this role, particularly in developing country like India, is expressively performed by one of the most prominent sector,i.e., the oil and petroleum sector. In this research study, Indias two leading giant of oil and petroleum sector- Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) from the private sector and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) from the public sector have been analysed with the help of financial ratios for measuring their financial performance in terms of liquidity, profitability, and solvency over the five year period (i.e.,2019-20 to 2023-24). The analysis shows that while both companies perform well overall, RIL demonstrates stronger profitability and solvency, whereas IOCL shows slightly better liquidity. Some liquidity indicators remain below the benchmark, and the paper offers strategic recommendations to address these gaps. The study contributes to understanding the financial health of both companies, aiding stakeholders and policymakers through its comparative insights and recommendations
