Abstract

The increasing demand for natural and skin-friendly hygiene products has led to the development of herbal hand washes as alternatives to synthetic formulations. This study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a herbal hand wash incorporating extracts from medicinal plants such as neem (Azadirachta indica), aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), and tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and skin-soothing properties. The herbal extracts were blended with mild surfactants, humectants, and natural thickeners to create a gentle yet effective hand-cleansing formulation. The final product was evaluated for physicochemical properties including pH, viscosity, foaming ability, and antimicrobial activity against common skin pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Results demonstrated that the herbal hand wash maintained acceptable aesthetic and functional characteristics, with notable antimicrobial activity and minimal skin irritation. The findings suggest that herbal hand wash is a safe, eco-friendly, and effective alternative to conventional chemical-based hand cleansers. The present study involves the formulation and evaluation of a herbal hand wash using Myrobalan (Terminalia chebula) extract, a well-known medicinal plant in Ayurveda, valued for its potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. The objective was to develop a skin-friendly, natural hand wash capable of providing effective microbial protection without the harsh effects of synthetic chemicals. The extract of Myrobalan was incorporated into a mild surfactant base, along with natural moisturizers and stabilizers. The formulated hand wash was evaluated for key parameters such as pH, viscosity, foaming ability, spreadability, and antimicrobial activity against common pathogens including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that the Myrobalan-based hand wash exhibited desirable cosmetic properties and significant antimicrobial activity, confirming its potential as a natural and effective hand hygiene product. The formulation supports the growing demand for sustainable and herbal alternatives in personal care.
