Abstract
Gym culture in Hyderabad reflects broader sociocultural transformations shaped by neoliberal consumerism, digital influence, class aspiration, and shifting ideas of gendered embodiment. What once existed as localized akhara-style iron temples rooted in traditional masculinity and strength has evolved into a diverse spectrum of fitness spacesfrom low-cost community gyms to high-end corporate fitness franchises. Drawing on ethnographic observations, semi-structured interviews, and secondary literature, this paper analyzes how gym environments function not merely as workout sites but as cultural arenas where identity, discipline, social hierarchy, and aspiration are continually negotiated. The study demonstrates that gyms in Hyderabad are dynamic microcosms of contemporary urban life, reflecting the pursuit of bodily transformation, economic mobility, and lifestyle performance within an increasingly networked and image-driven society.
