Abstract
Tattoo culture has always been mostly male, and this is shown by practices that prohibit women and LGBTQ+ people from being artists and clients. This article takes a close look at how gender roles are changing in the tattoo industry, focussing on structural problems including discrimination during apprenticeships, dangerous work environments, and the lack of representation for marginalised voices. The research shows how women and queer artists are changing tattoo culture by creating welcoming places, changing the way clients feel about getting tattoos, and being leaders in the art world (Dolinsky, 2022). This is shown through a detailed case study of Eden Body Art Studios, a tattoo business run by women and created by Deanna James. This study utilises qualitative interviews, literature review, and cultural analysis to elucidate the intricate dynamics of power, identity, and creativity that shape modern tattoo practices and their ramifications for fostering safer and more equitable body art enterprises.
