Abstract
AbstractTraining and development (T&D) have become vital components of organizational strategy in todays rapidly evolving industrial landscape, particularly in high-capital, high-risk sectors such as the steel industry. This study explores the impact of training and development initiatives on various performance parameters in the steel industry, with a specific focus on Indian and global companies. Using a secondary data-based approach, the research investigates how investments in employee development correlate with outcomes such as productivity, safety, operational efficiency, and employee retention. The steel industry, being a core sector, is crucial for economic growth and infrastructure development. However, it faces several challenges, including technological disruption, rising safety standards, skill gaps, and intense global competition. Against this backdrop, the role of effective training and continuous skill development becomes increasingly significant. Organizations that strategically invest in their human resources often demonstrate improved performance, lower turnover rates, and a stronger innovation culture. This research seeks to validate such claims using reliable secondary data from company reports, industry white papers, and governmental databases. The study adopts a descriptive and exploratory research design. Data was sourced from annual reports of major steel companies (e.g., Tata Steel, SAIL, JSW Steel), publications from industry associations (such as the World Steel Association), and relevant government agencies. Quantitative data related to training expenditures, productivity metrics, safety performance, and employee turnover was analyzed to identify trends and patterns. In addition, qualitative insights from case studies and published interviews were used to supplement and contextualize the findings. The analysis revealed a positive relationship between investment in training and performance outcomes across most sampled firms. Companies with structured training programs, dedicated learning budgets, and a focus on skill enhancement tended to show higher productivity levels and better safety records. For instance, firms like Tata Steel that publicly report T&D metrics also exhibit a more engaged workforce and consistent
