Abstract
Physical education, an essential component of comprehensive development, has traditionally been perceived primarily through Western frameworks. In contrast, the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), which is grounded in age-old traditions, presents a valuable wealth of insights that highlight the importance of harmonizing physical, mental, and spiritual health. This paper explores the relevance and applicability of IKS in modern physical education, highlighting practices such as yoga, martial arts (e.g., Kalaripayattu), and Ayurveda-based physical regimens. The research highlights the holistic perspective of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) on physical fitness, as informed by classical texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and Yoga Sutras. It emphasizes the importance of balance, discipline, and mindfulness within this framework. Additionally, the study explores how IKS practices correspond with modern educational objectives, such as enhancing mental resilience, alleviating stress, and encouraging sustainable living. By integrating IKS with modern physical education frameworks, the study proposes innovative strategies to address current challenges such as sedentary lifestyles and the erosion of cultural heritage. This paper emphasizes the need for policy reforms and curriculum integration to revive and mainstream IKS in schools and higher education, ensuring a culturally relevant and holistic approach to physical education. The findings advocate for the reimagining of physical education as not merely a physical activity but a pathway to holistic health, cultural preservation, and personal growth. This study call for further interdisciplinary research to bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern practices, fostering a unique synergy that aligns with Indias cultural ethos and global health trends.
