Abstract
AbstractLanguage barriers present significant challenges for non-native speaking students in universitiesworldwide, affecting their academic success, social integration, and personal well-being. Asuniversities grow increasingly global, students from diverse linguistic backgrounds mustnavigate complex academic environments where English, or another dominant language, is oftenthe medium of instruction. These students face multiple obstacles such as comprehendingfast-paced, heavily accented lectures, understanding academic jargon, and adjusting to informalsocial settings where cultural nuances can be easily misunderstood.Language barriers not only create academic difficulties but also affect students social lives, making it harder to form friendships and participate in campus activities. Additionally, communication with professors and peers may be hindered by linguistic misunderstandings, which can reduce the quality of classroom participation. Moreover, language barriers can leadto a lack of confidence, which often manifests as disengagement from academic and socialinteractions. This paper aims to explore the key challenges that non-native speaking students face, based oninsights drawn from supported literature. Five major areas will be examined: (1) challenges inunderstanding lectures, (2) social integration and cultural barriers, (3) effective teachingmethods, (4) the role of language support services, and (5) peer engagement and inclusiveclassroom discussions. By analysing these issues in depth, this paper will propose strategies tomitigate language barriers in universities, such as inclusive teaching methods, better languagesupport systems, and fostering cultural awareness. The ultimate goal is to provide a frameworkfor creating an inclusive academic environment where all students, regardless of their linguisticbackground, can thrive both academically and socially. In an increasingly interconnected world, where international student mobility is at an all-timehigh, universities must prioritise language inclusivity to ensure that every student has equalaccess to education. Addressing language barriers is essential not only for improving academicperformance but also for fostering a more cohesive and integrated campus community. Byadopting a multifaceted approach, universities can help non-native speakers overcomelanguage-related obstacles, thereby enhancing their overall academic experience. The strategiesdiscussed in this paper will highlight the importance of creating a supportive and inclusiveacademic atmosphere, where diversity is embraced, and language barriers are systematicallyreduced.
