Abstract

Background: Namami Gange is a flagshipprogram of the government of India for the rejuvenationof Ganga and its tributaries. NMCG Authority order ofOct 2016 States the the pollution in River Ganga and itstributaries shall also be monitored by use of satellite andother remote sensing technologies. As pupulationsincrease in the Ganga Basin, there are growing waterdemands, and hence higher levels of sewage flow intorivers of the Ganga Basin from both rural and urban areas.Excess untreated water entering the Ganga river systemstransports high organic and pathogen loads. Their usegenerates high levels of pollution with significant organicloads, with very high Biochemical Oxygen Demand. Thiswill inevitably lower Dissolved Oxygen (DO)concentrations in rivers, thereby threatening fisheries andbiodiversity(maacroinvertebrates). At the same time, the high sewagedischarges affect the suitability of the river for bathing dueto the higher levels ofpathogens in rivers. With climatechange increasing the frequency and intensity of rainfallevents, this is becoming a significant problem, threateningthe water quality and ecology of Ganga river system. Thesocietal impact of providing forecast data that is easilyand openly accessible will change how we see and valueour rivers and enable citizens to make better decisionsbased on better data for our health and the health of therivers of Ganga Basin. Description: An AIenableddecision support system may be developed to Integratedata from multiple sources such as satellite data, IOTbased sensor-generated data, intrumental meteorologicalmeasurements, in-situ flow, water quality observations, and miltiple hydrological & hydrodynamic models to worktogether in real time to generate historical patterns ofbehaviour and water quality forecasts for Ganga River.Model source code can be seamlessly incorporated into acloud platform infrastructure.
