Abstract
ABSTRACTDigital payment systems have rapidly reshaped financial transactions in developing economies, offering convenience, efficiency, and increased financial inclusion. This review paper examines the influence of digital payment systems on consumer buying behavior, drawing insights from over 60 scholarly sources. Findings reveal that digital platforms often encourage higher spending, impulsive purchases, and a shift toward cashless preferences due to their perceived security and ease of use. However, these benefits are unevenly distributed, with rural, older, and less-educated consumers facing barriers such as limited digital literacy, infrastructural deficits, and concerns over cybersecurity. Regional analyses highlight Indias success with UPI, Kenyas M-Pesa model, and Nigerias challenges with trust and access. The review underscores the need for inclusive policies, improved digital literacy, and robust cybersecurity frameworks. It also identifies gaps for further research, including longitudinal studies, rural adoption models, and psychological impacts of digital finance. Overall, while digital payments enhance consumer engagement and economic participation, ensuring equitable access and trust remains critical for sustained adoption and behavioral change.
