Abstract

The growing prevalence of mental health conditionssuch as anxiety, depression, and stress-related disordershas become a global concern. As more individuals seek support, many continue to face barriers in accessing effective and reliable mental health care. One emerging solution is Emotion Artificial Intelligence (Emotion AI), a technology designed to deliver emotionally intelligent support that can be personalized and scaled. Emotion AI works by enabling machines to sense and understand human emotions using various inputs, including facial movements, vocal tones, language patterns, and physiological indicators. This paper investigates how Emotion AI can contribute to mental health support. It explores how such technologies can aid both individuals and professionals in recognizing and responding to emotional needs. By analysing relevant studies, evaluating current AI tools, and addressing major ethical challenges, this paper highlights both the strengths and potential drawbacks of integrating Emotion AI into mental health services. Evidence shows that these systems can assist in identifying emotional distress early, improving patient engagement in therapy, and expanding the reach of psychological care. However, their use must be guided by ethical practices to prevent issues such as algorithmic bias, breaches of privacy, and misinterpretation of emotions. Ultimately, this study stresses the importance of interdisciplinary efforts to design Emotion AI tools that are ethical, empathetic, and genuinely supportive of mental health needs.
