Abstract
The existing intersection at Holbrook Campground and Midway Road forms a Y shape, with Holbrook as a free-flowing route and Midway being stop-controlled. Due to safety and sight distance concernsespecially for vehicles on Midway Road looking leftit was decided to realign Midway Road to form a more perpendicular intersection. The chosen location, at the area's highest point, ensures improved visibility. Stopping sight distance was found to be insufficient, contributing to the intersection's poor safety record, with 24 reported collisions in the past three years. Traffic counts were conducted during peak hours: 7:158:15 AM and 5:006:00 PM. Two alternatives were proposed to enhance safety and functionality. The first involves realigning the intersection and adding dedicated left and right turn lanes. Although this option would not significantly improve the level of service for westbound Midway Road, it was preferred due to ample right-of-way. The second alternative is to construct a roundabout. Roundabouts are effective at reducing accidents and managing traffic speeds, particularly at intersections with irregular geometry like this one. They also help minimize queuing at the approaches. Given the accident history and design inefficiencies, both alternatives offer potential improvements, with the roundabout providing added safety and traffic flow benefits.
