Abstract
AbstractIndia is renowned for its linguistic diversity, with hundreds of languages and dialects spoken across its regions. This paper explores the cultural and migration-driven factors behind Indias multilingual identity. The key focus is on two problem areas: 1) How cultural diversity fosters the creation, evolution, and preservation of multiple languages, and 2) How internal and international migration has shaped language transformation and spread. Through an analysis of state-level linguistic policies, urbanization, and diasporic communities, this study offers insights into the challenges faced by minority languages and the pressures of linguistic homogenization. Finally, the paper highlights the importance of balancing modernization with language preservation to sustain Indias linguistic heritage. By analysing regional language policies, urbanization trends, and the role of diasporic communities, this research highlights the dual pressures of linguistic homogenization and cultural resilience. The findings reveal that while urban migration promotes language adaptation and hybridization, it also threatens the survival of minority languages, with younger generations increasingly losing proficiency in their native tongues. Furthermore, the study explores government and community-led initiatives aimed at sustaining linguistic diversity, underscoring the critical need for balanced modernization efforts that honour Indias linguistic heritage.Through a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative insights from participants across diverse linguistic backgrounds, this research offers an in-depth look at the socio-cultural and political dynamics that influence language use in India. Ultimately, the paper advocates for educational reforms, multilingual policies, and community-based programs to promote linguistic inclusivity and mitigate the loss of Indias indigenous languages in an era of rapid globalization.KeywordsDiversity, Multilingualism, Migration, Multiculturalism, Linguistic Cultural Identity, Language Policy, Urbanisation
