Abstract
The pain associated with musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders is a common medical and socioeconomic problem worldwide. The objective of this study is to understand the different treatment options and provide the appropriate management of MSK pain, with special focus on the interventional pain therapy, according to the best available evidence and to minimize adverse outcomes and to enhance physical recovery, psychological well-being, and improve quality of life. An extensive computer search of the current literature in the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase databases was performed. The Pharmacological agents used for the treatment of MSK pain includes Analgesics, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Muscle relaxants, COX 2 inhibitors, Opioids, Duloxetine, Chondroitin and Glucosamine sulphate, Intraarticular injection, Medications for Neuropathic pain, Cervical injections, and Nerve blocks. Musculoskeletal pain is the main cause of disability worldwide and the burden is expected to increase with more sedentary lifestyles due to technological advances and the aging population. When pharmacological therapy is to be incorporated, it should be in the context of a shared decision-making model where both patient and prescriber evaluate the risks and benefits of various therapeutic choices.
