Abstract
Higher education industry is one of the most significant industries that contributes towards the rapid enhancement of the human capital in an economy. Specially in the private higher education companies which bridge the gap to access to quality education the need for successful counseling in education is important. The student counselors as the frontline in the company who ensure such is facilitated. However, in the context of Sri Lankan higher education industry it has been identified that less research knowledge and evidence exist on the field of assessing the effect of performance management systems on job satisfaction on the student counselors. The key factors of fairness, clarity of expectations, feedback, opportunities for development and recognition were identified to determine the relationship between performance management systems and job satisfaction among student counselors. As a result, the study was conducted to identify the factors and the nature of the relationship through adopting positivism following a deductive approach where a case study-based survey following a mono quantitative cross-sectional study was undertaken. A sample of 103 student counsellors of 40 branches of ABC (Pvt) Ltd was chosen and data was collected through a questionnaire. According to the findings of the study; based on the Pearson correlation a strong positive relationship was identified and the regression analysis provide evidence on the positive correlation among the independent and dependent variables. As a result, the research study was able to achieve its research objectives by identifying the fairness, Clarity of Expectations, Feedback, Opportunities of development, and Recognition as key determinants of performance management systems and the positive relationship of its effect on job satisfaction of student counselors. Thus, it will enable to provide a more comprehensive and commendable work environment for student counselors, enhance the field of counseling in education as well as facilitate the higher education industry as a whole in Sri Lanka.
