Abstract
The government and policy makers have always come out with several measures, initiatives and activities to reduce the poverty of the nation. The United Nations Organisation (UNO) drafted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the first one being No Poverty. India, being a pioneer of many such development initiatives has implemented the Mahatma Gandhi Nation Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), this has come well in advanced than the SDGs and benefited lakhs of people of the nation. Now, through this study the researcher intends to explore the possibilities on how the MGNREGA Scheme would turn as a tool to attain the SDG 1 (No Poverty). And for this purpose, the researcher has selected Eraiyur Village in Villupuram District of the State of Tamil Nadu, a backward village with no much job opportunities or self-employment. The respondents of the study are 103 beneficiaries of the MGNREGA Scheme. A structured questionnaire was used to gather the data, and the outcome being positive and the respondents being receptive in nature towards the scheme. Though there are a few changes and corrective measures are to be made in the operations of the scheme, the public of the village considers the scheme as The Light at the End of the Tunnel.
