Abstract
Argemone mexicana, commonly known as Mexican poppy, is a widely recognized medicinal plant in Indian folk medicine. Indigenous communities across various regions of India have long utilized this plant for its therapeutic properties. Traditionally, Argemone mexicana has been employed to treat a wide array of ailments, including skin disorders, respiratory issues, digestive disturbances, and inflammatory conditions. The plants seeds, leaves, and latex are particularly valued for their medicinal benefits. For instance, the latex is applied topically to heal wounds and sores, while decoctions of the leaves are consumed to alleviate symptoms of jaundice and malaria. Additionally, the seeds are known to possess purgative properties and are used in treating digestive problems.This review seeks to consolidate ethnobotanical knowledge regarding the traditional uses of Argemone mexicana across different Indian regions. It also aims to highlight the plant's significance in the cultural practices of various ethnic groups. Moreover, the study discusses the potential risks associated with the use of Argemone mexicana, given its known toxic properties, particularly due to the presence of alkaloids like sanguinarine and dihydrosanguinarine.
