Abstract
Dravyaguna Vigyan (the science of properties and actions of substances) is the Ayurvedic discipline that studies dravya (medicinal and nutritive substances), their intrinsic qualities (guna), tastes (rasa), potencies (virya), post-digestive effects (vipaka), and specific actions (prabhava). Grounded in the Panchamahabhuta (five-element) framework, Dravyaguna integrates environmental, preparative, and host factors (desha, kala, prakriti, anupana) to guide individualized therapy. This article reviews classical principles, their hierarchical relationships, modern interpretations (including ayurgenomics and pharmacodynamic correlates), and contemporary challenges in standardization, safety, and research.
